Why convert with RAC

Already a driver? We meet you there.

You don't need to learn to drive again. You need to adapt to Queensland roads, rules and the local test. That's exactly what we focus on.

Experienced-driver pace

We skip the basics you already know and focus on what's different here.

Local road-rules focus

Give-way rules, roundabouts, school zones and the conventions that differ from home.

Driving on the left

Coming from a right-hand-drive country? We build that muscle memory calmly and safely.

Test-ready, if you need it

If a practical test is required, we prepare you for exactly what's assessed.

Mock test and car hire

Practise under test conditions and hire our dual-controlled car for the official test.

We come to you

Free pickup from home or work, anywhere across South East Queensland.

Do you need to sit a test?

What's your conversion pathway?

Whether you need a driving test depends on where your licence is from. Here's the quick version.

Where is your current licence from?

Usually no driving test needed

From a recognised country you can generally transfer to a Queensland licence without sitting the practical test. A lesson or two to adjust to local roads and driving on the left is optional, but most people find it worth it.

You'll need to pass the Queensland test

From a country that isn't on Queensland's recognised list, you'll need to pass the road-rules test and the practical driving test. That's exactly what we prepare you for: road-ready coaching, a mock test, and our car on the day.

Check your country with TMR

The recognised-country list is set by Transport and Main Roads and does change, so it's worth confirming yours directly. Either way, we'll get you confident on Queensland roads and ready for a test if you need one.

Good to know

Converting your licence, answered.

Do I have to sit a driving test to convert?

It depends where your licence is from. If it's from a country Queensland recognises, you can usually transfer without a practical test. If it's from a country that isn't recognised, you'll need to pass the road-rules test and the practical driving test. The recognised list is set by Transport and Main Roads, so check yours with them.

How long can I drive on my overseas licence?

You can drive on a valid overseas licence while you're visiting. Once you become a Queensland resident, you generally need to transfer to a Queensland licence within three months. If your licence isn't in English, carry a recognised English translation while you drive.

I've been driving for years. Do I really need lessons?

Not to relearn driving, no. But Queensland has its own road rules, roundabout conventions and, for many, driving on the left. A lesson or two irons out the differences, and if you need to sit the practical test, targeted prep makes a real difference. We work at an experienced-driver pace, not a beginner one.

Can you help with the practical test itself?

Yes. If your pathway requires the practical driving test, we prepare you for exactly what's assessed, run a mock test so you know how you'll be marked, and hire you our dual-controlled car for the day. You sit the test in a vehicle you already know.

Do you teach both automatic and manual?

Both. Whether you drove an automatic or a manual back home, we'll match your lessons and the changeover package to the licence you want here in Queensland.

Overseas licence conversion across Brisbane and South East Queensland

RAC School of Motoring helps new arrivals across Brisbane convert their overseas driver licence to a Queensland one, with lessons pitched at experienced drivers rather than beginners. If your licence is from a country Queensland doesn't recognise, you'll need to pass the Queensland practical driving test, and we get you road-ready and confident for it.

Adapting to Queensland roads

Most of the challenge isn't driving, it's the differences: give-way rules, roundabouts, school zones, and for many drivers, adjusting to driving on the left. Our instructors focus your lessons on exactly those things, calmly and at your pace, across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Redlands, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.

Recognised-country lists, testing requirements and timeframes are set by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and can change. Check your own situation on the qld.gov.au / TMR website. This page is general guidance to help you plan, not official advice.
